These pictures were all taken in laboratory settings, mainly with specimens I collected on blue-water dives or on cruises with the Johnson-Sea-Link submersible.

We finally figured out what the mystery beast is! It is a kind of doliolid (similar to a salp). There is a paper by Godeaux and Harbison (2002), which describes this and two other genera.
